Plot Summary
The film follows the globe-trotting mission of Agent Vinod (Saif Ali Khan), a RAW agent who is tasked to find out what '242' is. He travels to various countries such as Russia, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia and England, where he encounters various enemies and allies. He also meets Iram Parveen Bilal (Kareena Kapoor), a British-Pakistani doctor who works for the ISI and has a connection to '242'. Vinod discovers that '242' is actually the detonator for a nuclear device that is planned to be detonated in New Delhi by a group of rogue ISI colonels who want to start a war between India and Pakistan. Vinod must stop them before it is too late.

Production and Release
The film was announced in 2009 by Saif Ali Khan, who wanted to make a spy thriller inspired by James Bond and Jason Bourne. He also decided to produce the film under his banner Illuminati Films along with Dinesh Vijan. He chose Sriram Raghavan to direct the film, after working with him in Ek Hasina Thi (2004). The film was shot in various locations across India, Russia, Morocco, Latvia, Uzbekistan, Somalia and England. The film's music was composed by Pritam, while the background score was done by Daniel B. George. The film's title song "Raabta" was sung by Arijit Singh. The film was released on 23 March 2012.
Reception and Legacy
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, acting performances, action sequences, songs, cinematography and production values, but criticized the screenplay and writing. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Agent Vinod is a hi-octane espionage thriller with a heart. It is not just brawny and dynamic, but witty and crazy too. It has a riveting plot, superb action, catchy music and of course, the charismatic Saif Ali Khan to steer it to the winning post." Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Agent Vinod is too long, too loud, and too silly to be taken seriously. It's also too boring to be enjoyed as a kitschy action movie."
The film was also a moderate box office success, earning 730 million (equivalent to 1.2 billion or US$15 million in 2023) on a budget of 600 million (equivalent to 1.0 billion or US$13 million in 2023). The film was nominated for seven awards at the 2013 Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor (Saif Ali Khan), Best Actress (Kareena Kapoor), Best Director (Sriram Raghavan), Best Music Director (Pritam), Best Lyricist (Amitabh Bhattacharya for "Raabta"), Best Playback Singer - Male (Arijit Singh for "Raabta") and Best Action (Parvez Khan). The film won the award for Best Action.
The film has gained a cult following over the years, especially among fans of spy thrillers and action movies. The film is also considered as one of the best performances of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, who were dating at the time of the film's release and got married later in 2012. The film's songs, especially "Raabta", have become popular among music lovers. The film's sequel, Agent Vinod 2, has been rumored for a long time, but has not been confirmed yet.
